Using Termy

Tabs

Open, switch, rename, and organize tabs.

New tabs inherit the active pane's working directory, including while an app such as lazygit is running. Native tabs use the shell-reported directory or a fresh lookup of the shell process; tmux tabs query the selected pane directly. An explicitly requested directory takes precedence.

Tab titles: Tabs and titlebar.

Open a tab from your file manager

On macOS, go to Settings → General → System integration → Default terminal and click Set as default. This sets Termy as the system's terminal handler. Run the installed Termy.app to use this option. Apps with their own external terminal preference must be configured separately. Finder's Open new Termy tab here service remains available; opening a file in Termy opens its containing folder without running the file.

After Termy is installed, file managers expose Open new Termy tab here:

On macOS, launch Termy once after updating to refresh the Finder service. The action finds the installed app by its identifier, so it continues to work after the app bundle is replaced or moved.

PlatformWhere it appears
WindowsExplorer folder, folder background, and drive context menus
macOSFinder Services, and Open With on a folder
LinuxNautilus/Caja Scripts, Nemo actions, KDE/Dolphin folder menus, and Open With

If Termy is already running, the action adds a tab in that folder. You can also request a tab from a shell:

termy --new-tab --working-directory /path/to/project

Open another window

On Linux, each launch of termy opens a separate window. This also applies to termy /path/to/project and termy --working-directory /path/to/project. Your window manager can tile and move each window independently. Set your Hyprland terminal command to termy; no wrapper is needed.

Use --new-window to explicitly open a window on any platform:

termy --new-window
termy --new-window --working-directory /path/to/project

Closing a window or exiting its last shell leaves the other windows running. Additional windows start fresh. The first window owns the saved native session; extra windows do not overwrite it. With tmux enabled, extra windows use separate, temporary managed sessions. Explicitly attaching to a named tmux session still shares that session.

On macOS and Windows, launches without either flag keep their existing behavior.

Move tabs between windows

Drag a tab outside its window and release to open it in a new window. Drop it onto another Termy terminal window to move it there. The tab keeps its running shells, split panes, and scrollback. Moving the last tab closes the empty window. Press Escape before releasing to cancel a drag. If the tab bar is hidden for a single tab, turn off auto_hide_tabbar to make that tab available to drag.

Windows must use the same terminal runtime. With tmux, they must also use the same server and different sessions.
